The course content includes:

  1. Introduction to Environmental Chemistry, important concepts. Atmosphere-Atmospheric pollutants: Sulfur dioxide, Nitrogen oxides, Carbon monoxide.
  2. Atmospheric pollutants: Gaseous hydrocarbons, Volatile organic compounds, Ozone, Suspended particles.
  3. Cloud (smog, photochemical), Acid rain.
  4. Hydrosphere: Properties of water, Chemistry of natural waters, Acid-base chemistry of carbonate system in natural waters.
  5. Surface water pollution: Dissolved oxygen, Nitrogen compounds, Phosphates, Nutrient status of water systems.
  6. Groundwater pollution, Transport models of organic pollutants in groundwater, Dispersion, adsorption models.
  7. Heavy metals, Toxicity – Bioaccumulation (mercury, lead, cadmium, etc.).
  8. Toxic organic compounds, Pesticides: Organochlorines, Organophosphates, Carbamates, Triazines.
  9. Toxic organic compounds: Dioxins, Polychlorinated biphenyls, Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, Phenols, Endocrine disruptors.
  10. Petroleum hydrocarbons and the marine environment, Soil, Urban sewage, Solid waste.
  11. Chemical equilibrium modeling, description of the MINTEQ model
  12. Applications of the MINTEQ model
  13. Presentation of assignments – Oral examination
