The course content includes:
- Introduction to Environmental Chemistry, important concepts. Atmosphere-Atmospheric pollutants: Sulfur dioxide, Nitrogen oxides, Carbon monoxide.
- Atmospheric pollutants: Gaseous hydrocarbons, Volatile organic compounds, Ozone, Suspended particles.
- Cloud (smog, photochemical), Acid rain.
- Hydrosphere: Properties of water, Chemistry of natural waters, Acid-base chemistry of carbonate system in natural waters.
- Surface water pollution: Dissolved oxygen, Nitrogen compounds, Phosphates, Nutrient status of water systems.
- Groundwater pollution, Transport models of organic pollutants in groundwater, Dispersion, adsorption models.
- Heavy metals, Toxicity – Bioaccumulation (mercury, lead, cadmium, etc.).
- Toxic organic compounds, Pesticides: Organochlorines, Organophosphates, Carbamates, Triazines.
- Toxic organic compounds: Dioxins, Polychlorinated biphenyls, Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, Phenols, Endocrine disruptors.
- Petroleum hydrocarbons and the marine environment, Soil, Urban sewage, Solid waste.
- Chemical equilibrium modeling, description of the MINTEQ model
- Applications of the MINTEQ model
